Title REVISITING METHODOLOGY OF CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES: REALIZATION OF THE STRATEGIES OF DISCOURSE
Author(-s) Makarova M.N.
Abstract The methodology of critical discourse analysis as the comprehensive method of sociolinguistic research is considered. The main approaches to the discourse are analyzed; the common feature of them is representation of the social environment in some language practices. The widest concept is presented in the Norman Fairclough’s works, in which discourse is defined as using language in form of social practice. Fairclough found out the several processes of transforming macrostructures of the modern discourses: technologization, marketization, commodification, and democratization. All of such tendencies express the transformation of the late capitalism societies. The interdisciplinary character of the critical discourse analysis and its focus on issues of social inequality and power is highlighted in this article. Intertextuality and interdiscoursivity present continuality of discourse that manifest itself as social attitudes and values, which are expressed by the discourse. The categories “intertextuality” and “interdiscoursivity” are necessary for comprehensive analysis of the discourse, that involves other texts and genres and for its consideration as a part of another discourses. Such categories represent power relation in society. There are many approaches to the logic of critical discourse analysis. The main of them is related to social actors, their social dispositions, their activities, and the social context in which such activities happen. The key terms of discourse analysis are considered, such as “presupposition”, and “coercion”. The roles of the main strategies of discourse are demonstrated: referential, predicational, argumentation, legitimation, and topoi. All the process of realization of the strategies is the movement from agents to knowledge, and manifest view of the world that is presented in the discourse and actors’ dispositions. The strategies demonstrate how discourse creates the main agents’ social identity, their social position, their relations, and the knowledge that determines the interaction between them.
Keywords discourse, critical discourse analysis, strategies of discourse, intertextuality, interdiscoursivity, presupposition, coercion, topoi
