Title NATIONALISM VS. GLOBALISM IN THE INTELLECTUAL DISCOURSE
Author(-s) Fadeeva L.A.
Abstract The article is devoted to the intellectual discourse on the problems of nationalism and globalism. The author pays attention to the role of public intellectuals who are well-known academicians, writers, journalists etc., but also critical thinkers analyzing the most important problems and addressing to the wide public through mass media, books and articles, presentations and social media. Nationalism is connected in the intellectual discourse with the nation as a political community. At the same time, intellectuals tend to widen the interpretations of nationalism taking into account counter-state nationalism and post-nationalism as a feedback on the globalization process. Globalism is evaluated by intellectuals as a political course targeted by the Western countries. Criticism of globalism as a neoliberal model of globalization, imposed by the leaders of Western countries, is growing both in the non-Western area and within the West itself. The rise of ethnic regional autonomies and their nationalism makes a new challenge for political elites of the states. Previous course to weaken nationalism of “nations without states” is estimated by them as a kind of cultural imperialism. 2010s became the time of the rise of nationalism in aggressive form. Intellectuals are involved in the process and some of them even stimulate it. It is a big challenge and could be a great threat for the mankind. The author believes that intellectuals can keep their different political views but escape the escalation of hate and should follow the principles of intellectual communication.
