Title FLANUERING AS A SOCIOCULTURAL PRACTICE IN URBAN SPACE OF POST-SOVIET INDUSTRIAL CITY

Abstract This paper considers a practice of purposeless urban walking which is based on everyday pedestrian and cycling mobility. It is outlined different representations of sauntering and «flaneur» as a social type in social, cultural theories and urban planning. The nature of the relationship between flaneur and urban space is discussed. The aim of the sociological research was to describe types of «flaneuring» in urban space of post-soviet industrial city by using semi-structured interviews and mapping. The results of the research show diversity of used tactics which were analyzed in detail through accompanying activities, technologies, differences in the ways of moving, significance of walking together. Itineraries marked by informants present city map which has own logic of assembling. Certain types of «flaneuring» are located in relevant city space. Appealing qualities of walking area are formulated on the basis of perceptions of places by informants. In general, the results allow drawing conclusions about a relation between practice and current transformations of urban space.
